Dear Rod,
Thanks you for all that you accomplished. You were a man of strong character and well defined principles. You were real, caring and a great leader. You also knew how to laugh and have fun. You were an inspiration. You had a very special and effective way of being present, honest and direct. You were always on duty and, in the sports vernacular that you loved so much; you simply gave your best effort and "layed through the whistle" every day.
You had a unique and extraordinary way of blending deep thought with humor, and rich metaphors with important concepts. You even made Yogi and Vince seem appealing and relevant. You were a great employer and a wonderful friend. Your interest in me and my family was sincere and much appreciated by all of us. Thank you again, you will be greatly missed.
David Maraniss, the author of WHEN PRIDE STILL MATTERED, described Vince Lombardi as, "A human being that could not be separated from a symbolic character created from his success." In my mind, I will always picture you in a blue blazer, speaking, leading, teaching and being in charge. In the years "after Punahou", I never adjusted to thought of you being retired or the vision of you being casually dressed. As Vince Lombardi is the symbol for hard work and winning, you are the symbol of a well educated man that knew how to lead, speak his truth, get the job done, enjoy the process and make it fun for others.
On behalf of Elise, Reyn, Shannon and myself, God Bless you and you family.
Truly,
Brad
