In this section, I will post articles that speak to the issues that affect your ability to perform at you best at work.
The Decision For Less That Produced More
August 19, 2003
In 1982, while on sabbatical, I volunteered to work as a performance coach with Bill Curry and the Georgia Tech Football Team. During this time, a player named Brian Yates died suddenly in his sleep. I experienced the devastating effect that his death had on every body associated with the team. I also realized that I didn't have an awareness of my own feelings or the skills to be present for other people. To this end, I began to attend funerals with the specific purpose of learning how to stay present, confront my feelings and speak to the issues.
These Eulogies for Rufus Guthrie, my teammate at Georgia Tech, Cliff Bailey a former student and dear friend, Danielle Nardone, our family member, and Heather Ho and Rich Lee two former students that died in 9/11 represent my continued effort to deal with effectively with death and express my feelings for the people I love.

This program is for athletes who want to maintain a base of fitness that supports full participation in the activity(s) of their choice. To make this program work you need the fire: the interest to stay active, the excitement to get up emotionally, the intense desire to perform at your best and the passion to work hard. The program is based on the simple truth that as you age your best performance will be different. In most cases, your quickness, your explosive power and your strength will decrease and the time it takes you to get ready, finish and recover will increase.

The best ever in local underground journalism; writing for this magazine was pure fun. It provided me with an opportunity to be an active part of Bernie Baker's journalistic and social life, the life that many have tried to emulate but no one has been able to duplicate. Bernie, best known as one of Surfer Magazine's photographers and editors, a writer, surfing judge, competition director, traveler and connoisseur of living the surf life-style. He has a quick mind and a who's who list of friends throughout the surfing world. If you are thinking about going to a remote Island for a surf trip, rest assured that Bernie may already been there twice, once in the winter and once in the summer. And he knows the people you'll need to know to get back home, quickly and safely.
Bernie's claim to fame is that his home at Sunset Beach, in the 70's and 80's, known as the "Embassy", was more a club house for inner-circle; BK, MR, Bradshaw, the international crew, the list goes on and does not end. Bernie was also the first person on the North Shore to have MTV and the best PILE of surf gear ever assembled.
Bernie gave me my assignments, edited my stories in his classic style... always on the run to wrap up his own interview with someone of notoriety. His partner Diane O'Rourke designed the layouts, managed Bernie's energy and kept me on schedule... somehow never losing her passion for the magazine.
Enjoy the articles; just like the surf they are free.

In this column, I write about people who have the ability to accept their reality and run above the line. The line is a metaphor that separates a positive and negative performance. Running above the line involves the ability to be present, embrace the inherent challenges, and have fun while finding value in the effort. Running below the line is a negative reaction to the reality of the situation.
As a performance coach, I offer presentations, workshops, group meetings and individual sessions that are designed to encourage, facilitate and inspire. My clients include student athletes, performing artists, professionals, coaches, teams, parents and whole families. While my clients focus on a wide variety of topics, the common goal is to identify and resolve performance issues and create strategies for enhanced success.
A special thanks to Christian Friis, Todd Iacavelli, Katherine Nichols, Carrie Wong, Zack Matayoshi and all of the Iolani Wrestlers, and Reneau Kennedy for there contribution to these articles.

These stories were written for WINDTRACKS; Clay Feeter was the man in charge and his "stoke" was and is shared by a hard core group of Ocean Athletes. Only the article about "Yards" made it to print. That particular issue of the magazine was amazing. The quality of the paper, the colors and photo's were the best imaginable. If you are lucky enough to have a copy then you know that Clay and his staff went for the gold. Unfortunately, the magazine was forced into dry dock and as the saying, the rest is history.
Thanks Clay for letting me is part of the history and a special thanks to Robby, Steve Wilkings, John Bilderback and Darrell Wong for your support in making these stories happen.

This HiLevel Guide is being written for endurance athletes of all ages and ability levels, as well as those who teach and/or coach these sports. The HiLevel Guide is made up of 12 coaching points for parents, athletes, teachers and coaches. The coaching points for athletes provide an understanding of the skills needed to build confidence, manage emotions, sharpen focus, and make good on your desire to improve at what you love to do.
As these coaching points are written they will be posted on home page of my website. Please feel free to contact me if you have comments or testimonials as to the effective of this material.
I'm working on this project with Christian Friis, Christal Cuadra and Todd Iacovelli
